Day 9 - Edinburgh, Scotland to John o'Groats, Scotland

There are a number of places that when motorcyclists speak about them, they do so with longing to visit. One of them is John O'Groats in Scotland and that is the end point of my trip today.

John o' Groats is popular with motorbikers because it is generally regarded as the most northerly settlement on the island of Great Britain, although the most northerly point on the island of Great Britain is nearby Dunnet Head about 2 miles from JoG. It is however one end of the longest distance between two inhabited points on the island of Great Britain, Land's End being the other. The phrase Land's End to John o' Groats (LEJOG) is frequently heard both as a literal journey (being the longest possible in Great Britain) and as a metaphor for great or all-encompassing distance, similar to the American phrase coast to coast.

I left Edinburgh and Paula who stayed to support a family affair and made my way North, passing close to Loch Ness and also Inverness.

On the way came across an accident that had just happened.

The A9 is a beautiful ride and with autumn colors even better.

Stopped for a quick bite to eat in a cafe in the middle of the beautiful Scottish vegetation. The capucinno was excellent and warmed the soul.

As I got more and more north the views and road got better.

What an amazing ride that was culminated with arriving just in time to get a picture in front of the JoG sign.

Found a very nice B&B and Gordon the owner took me into town (and later came back to pick me up) for a hot dinner with some cold Guinness. The desert was very good.

Tomorrow will wake up early and take ferry to the Orkney islands. I am told they are worth visiting. Let's hope weather cooperates.
